What ever happened to Tommy Campbell? Does anyone know if he has recorded anything recently? His web site is seemingly out of date.

Oh, never mind. I checked out his "Tours" link and see that he's been gigging in Japan. Gee, I wonder if he moved there.

Great to see something on Tommy Campbell here. He was surely one the cats pretty influential with me. Certainly had/has his own voice - his own way. The hi-hat stuff was really hip, and his distinct tom set-ups and the tuning too.

As far as I knew he's been living in japan for a number of years now.

Would really be nice to be hearing more from him these days.

A lot of the Japanese pop stars seem to be really loaded because they hire a lot of the too L.A session guns dont they?

TC killed on McLaughlin's Belo Horizonte record. [But don't tell that to TBo...who's MIA...prob cuz he has a real life, yo] ;cp We talked about him at some length back when I first reared my ugly head around here, in summer '02[?]

As was said in another post, the Japanese people seem to love ALL types of music genres, both past & present, & esp in FUSION; you might actually make a living there. [also, 80s metal/rock!!! [img]wink.gif[/img] ].

It would seem there are many other areas of the world culturally that are generally more open-minded than much of the west AFA musical taste is concerned.

We often tend to love a bunch of noisy, shiny [aka repetitive, sensationalized, dumbed-down] cr*p here. [img]redface.gif[/img] ;c/

General school music education programs aren't helpin' much [or more accurately, lack thereof].

When I arrived at Berklee, my first year,
TC was getting ready to graduate. I made
it a point to see him and Kenwood, whenever
I could. Tommy had(s) fantastic stick cont-
rol and tentacle fingers.

Always a great player.

Definately Killer TC. This is one my first Fusion albums. My first drum teacher, first day, got sick of me talking about Raven and Rush. He proceeded to play this album, Tony Williams Believe it and other classics. I still remember Tommy's mammoth floor tom that made my turntable arm jump everytime.

Saw T.C. live with J. McLaughlin around the time I was starting to stay in LA a lot in the early 80's. This was around the time of Belo Horizonte and Music Spoken Here - (on which he also killed big time!)

Tommy also toured with The Manhattan Transfer briefly from 92-94. He moved to Japan in 1999, to live with his Japanese wife and son. He also moved to kick a serious addiction to cocaine and other drugs. thank god he did. he's a beautiful player and extremely original in his approach.
There's an exercise on Steve Hass' website that he developed with Tommy.
